oh the calories...

my new favourite muffin at tim hortons is whole wheat raspberry. now i don't ever buy muffins from my counting points days...however...doesn't whole wheat raspberry just sound healthy?

i looked it up on the tim horton's nutrition chart today. the 2nd highest calories of all the muffins only stepping down for chocolate chip. even the fruit explosion muffins (yuck) are 40 less calories and lower in fat. sigh.

just so you know.

so, i know i could just look it up myself, but how many cals and fat grams does this muffin actually have?

Yeah, stores always try to trick you into thinking something is healthy with words like 'whole wheat'; then they load it with fat and calories to make it still taste good.

Also, I recently learned that whole wheat blocks your body's absorption of iron, zinc, and calcium. Whole wheat bread is okay because the yeast kills the phytates that do this, but anything else with whole wheat (cookies, muffins, cereals) will do this. Refined wheat and other whole grains are okay though (e.g. oats).

good tid bit rebecca.....I also recently learned that the word multi-grain is a term used to sound healthy, but in actual fact its multiple types of grains that have been cut up, and been sucked dry of most of its nutritional value. whereas the 'whole wheat' cousin, is using the whole kernel.

so theres some food for thought

It drives me nuts when people at work buy muffins instead of donuts for the office because they're trying to be 'healthy'. The muffins are so much worse! And less fun.
