now they're on their own...

the salmon were released today!

i scooped the fry out of the tank (which took 15 minutes!) into a big bucket and we headed to a nearby slough that leads into the Fraser River. all the kids had their own little containers so that they could each release a few of the their own.

hopefully we didn't freak the salmon out so much that they swam into the river and died but because i forgot my little net at school, i had to scoop all the fish out with one of the containers that the kids had brought. there was some wicked turbulence in that bucket before they were released. oh dear.

so when the kids all released their fry, there were mostly shouts of "good bye!" and "there they go!" with one or two "mine's just lying here in the mud...". umm..."he's just scared."

and hopefully now the salmon dreams will stop - i've spent many an subconscious hour with these salmon and i'm looking forward to that being over!

thanks for all the comments and interest here on the blog! here are some pics - more here.

getting water from the river to add to our salmon bucket to help acclimatize them.
scooping...

(that's me with the giant bucket - i couldn't get the last dozen out so i released them myself!)

"there they go!"

WAHOO! Seriously, you should win a "teaching excellence" award or something.

great pics -- I really think you need to write/publish a book on your experiences from pre-egg to the final send-off... a spin off the usual chicklit stuff.. something like Bridget Jones raises salmon :)
